Our Story

Welcome to Teddie's Tribe!

Teddie recovering with a smile on her face a few days after her brain surgery

How many children have cancer?

  •  Each year in the U.S. there are an estimated 15,780 children between the ages of birth and 19 years of age who are diagnosed with cancer.
  • Approximately 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday.
  • Globally there are more than 300,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year. Every 3 minutes, somewhere in the world a family hears the devastating words that their child has been diagnosed with cancer.
  • Cancer remains the most common cause of death by disease for children in America.

How much funding goes to childhood cancer?

Federal research funding for ALL childhood cancers combined is $195 million. That’s only 4% of the $5.2 billion cancer research budget and a fraction of the funding for other single adult cancer subtypes.

What treatments are used for childhood cancer?

Most children battling cancer go through at leasts one of the following: surgeries, chemotherpay, or radiation.

  • For many childhood cancers, we are using the SAME treatments that were used in the 1970’s.
  • Since 1980, HUNDREDS of cancer drugs have been approved for adults, but only TWELVE cancer drugs have been approved for use in children and only THREE have been developed specifically for children.

What does the gold ribbon symbolise?

Gold is a precious material and since children are our most precious treasures, it is a perfect image highlighting the importance of beating childhood cancer.  The gold ribbon represents all types of cancer affecting children and adolescents: it is the universal symbol to create awareness about childhood cancer and mobilise increased attention.

Most people know that the pink ribbon symbolises breast cancer but unfortunately there isn’t much awareness the gold ribbon. This is unfortunate and shows much should be done to bring awareness about childhood cancer.

When do we celebrate childhood cancer awareness month?

September is childhood cancer awareness month, however we should be sharing about and fundarising for childhood cancer ALL YEAR LONG.

How can I help?

There are so many ways to help get involved with childhood cancer awreness and support.

1. Learn About Cancer – If you want to do something about cancer, you first need to understand it. The more that you learn about what children’s cancer is, how many children it affects, the different types of children’s cancer and how the cancer is treated, the more you will want to do everything you can to end it.

2.  Create An Event or Campaign – Participate in a fundraiser and hold an event or campaign to celebrate and honor children that have been affected by children’s cancer. Get creative and host a walk, 5K, family fun day, bowl-a-thon, or turn anything you participate in into a fundraiser to help end children’s cancer.  There are so many amazing organizations and foundations that you can get involved in!
